Mérida and Tizimín concentrated 41% of the active cases of screwwormaccording to the report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Service of Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica).

According to the most recent report available, which includes cases until November 8, in Yucatán there was an active record of 141 cases of cattle screwworm, of which 67, the majority were detected in cattle.

Dogs with screwworm in Yucatán

The second species in which more cases were found of worms they were the dogssince 56 dogs were infested by the larvae as well as eight pigs, one horse, five sheep and four cats.

This total of cases was distributed in 39 populations, among which Mérida and Tizimín stand outthe city in the east of the state being the one with the highest number of infested animals, with 32, most of them bovines.

Mérida is second place with a difference of six cases, since it registered 26 affected animals until the aforementioned cut-off.

Other municipalities of Yucatán with screwworm

The other municipalities in which more cases had been documented were Oxkutzcab, with seven cases. Halachó then followed with six cases, while Cacalchén and Hunucmá registered five active cases each.

The other cases occurred in Panabá and Tekax, with 4 each. Hoctún, Kanasín, Ucú and Temozón presented three each. Of the remaining 27 municipalities, 13 registered two cases each and the remaining 14 only presented one case.

As to active cases, Yucatán occupied fourth place, below Oaxaca, where active cases were 159. The two entities with the most active cases until the cutoff on Saturday the 8th were Chiapas with 214 cases and Veracruz with 210.

How many cases are there in Quintana Roo and Campeche?

In Quintana Roo, 27 active cases had been reported in the towns of Othón P. Blanco, Bacalar, José María Morelos and Lázaro Cárdenas. While in Campeche The cases were located in Candelaria, Carmen, Calkiní, Escárcega, Tenabo and in the capital San Francisco de Campeche.

However, these figures could vary when state and federal authorities update the data with the most recent epidemiological week. As you will remember, the screwworm has already reached 89 municipalities in Yucatán.— DANIEL VALDEZ
