The pilots of the Tunisian Airbus mistakenly tried to land at the wrong runway at Nice Cote d’Azur Airport, which has two parallel runways situated close together, The Times reported.

Both the planes came within 10ft of crashing into each other – one of the closest near misses in the history of aviation.

French transport minister Philippe Tabarot said a catastrophic collision between the two planes was “narrowly avoided”.

Both flights were carrying around 300 passengers each, it is understood.

The airport management blamed the pilots of the Tunisian flight for their alleged mistake.

They said: “It seems that the Nouvelair pilot made an error.”

It is understood that the pilots of the EasyJet flight 4706, which was flying to Nantes, were so shaken by the incident that they chose not to continue the flight.

One passenger told local media outlet Le Figaro that the captain was in a “visible state of shock”.

They added: “The plane was about to take off when we heard an enormous noise of engines right alongside.”
